OKOBOJI, Iowa (KCAU) —It was another cold day Saturday at the University of Okoboji Winter Games, but that didn’t keep folks from attending their favorite activities.
“We’re just moving. We’re moving, we have lots of layers. It’s going to be fine. A couple hot drinks like hot chocolate and coffee. You’ll stay warm, no issues.”
“It is cold, but you know we got the drinks, we got good company, we got some great ice. We’re all right, we’re surviving,” said attendees at the event.
Saturday at the Winter Games had the usual events.
From broomball in Smith’s Bay, softball on the ice in front of the Ritz and the annual 5k race at Arnolds park amusement park
“The best part about today is just seeing it all come to life. It’s a community wide event. We couldn’t do it without every single member of our community. Whether you’re a business, a registrant, a volunteer. I mean seeing everyone come together is the best part,” said Morgan Strauss, Director of Events at the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber.
A new event to this year’s games is the “Hard Water Open” which means it’s golf on the ice. 85 players signed up to play six holes on the ice. Each hole was about 50-75 yards long.
“Nobody ever golfs on the ice, it’s something different. Everybody wants to get out and play and do something in the winter. Why not golf,” said Nick Christiansen, owner of Emerald Hills Golf Course in Arnolds Park.
Parks Marina had to cancel their annual oval races this year but still had flag football on ice and “Busch Light curling” which included “Herky” from the University of Iowa.
“This is really a community bonding moment. This is a chance to get outside, get energized and just really enjoy winter together as a community, as a bonding situation. It’s our last chance to get together as a group until the summer months hit,” said Jared Ransom, Marketing Coordinator for Parks Marina.
Saturday afternoon, the cold weather didn’t stop a favorite event at the University of Okoboji winter games, the polar plunge.
“We’re always worried about our participants, that’s why we have our safety team on standby here. We took a couple of extra precautions this year. We have an enclosed trailer with heat in it so if folks feel like they are getting chilly they can sure step into there. We’re going to try to control the numbers that are coming through anyways. We’ll release a group at a time maybe. Overall, not a lot of concern because it usually runs 20-30 minutes so we can get folks through pretty quick,” said Chief Chris Yungbluth of Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire and Rescue
Over 100 brave people signed up to jump into the frigid waters of West Lake Okoboji
“Amazing, amazing. You can feel all the cold in your whole body, but it feels so amazing. It wakes you up,” said one participant.
“Oh man, it was crazy cold, but it was worse when you got out, honestly. It was way worse when you got out,” said another participant.
The 46th University of Okoboji Winter Games conclude on Sunday.
